Trying to Understand Why AlphaGenome Is a Breakthrough

Hi everyone,

I’m not a genomics or ML researcher — my background is in microbiology, and I’ve spent the past few years working as a programmer. When DeepMind released AlphaGenome, I kept seeing it described as a breakthrough, but I didn’t fully understand why.

I took some time to read the paper and pulled together my own study notes to make sense of what makes AlphaGenome important. The write-up isn’t meant as a technical deep dive, more as an accessible guide for people like me who want to understand both the biological and computational challenges it tackles.

You can read my notes here - Trying to Understand DeepMind’s AlphaGenome Breakthrough | Tobi Okewole

Would love feedback, corrections, or pointers to other resources that explain AlphaGenome well.
